Sir Christopher Sydney Cockerell (1910-1999) was the British engineer who invented the Hovercraft.He began testing his ideas for a vehicle that moved atop a cushion of air in 1955.His first Hovercraft prototype, the SR.N1, was launched in the spring of 1959 and only weeks later crossed the English Channel in 20 minutes.
